Brain Games: Why is mental stimulation so important?
“You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis
As we age, we’re quick to notice external differences in our appearance. Whether it’s lower back pain, arthritis or aches in the joints, we are often aware of the physical activity associated with ageing. However, whilst it’s important to assess and monitor this physical health, it becomes very easy to forget about our mental stimulation.
The benefits of mental stimulation
Looking after your brain is essential for an older person. Not only does this maintain emotional well-being, but several studies have shown that mental stimulation can reduce the risk of conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. In the same way physical exercise strengthens muscles, staying mentally active strengthens brain function. This improves memory, problem-solving, attention and focus.
Aside from the cognitive benefits, staying mentally stimulated also gives a sense of purpose. It helps older adults stay connected by improving social ability and interactions, allowing them to more meaningfully engage in activities. Continually keeping the brain active helps promote continuous learning, which allows older adults to maintain their independence for longer.
Stimulating both sides of the brain
The left and right hemisphere of the brain are responsible for different cognitive functions, so it’s important to keep both sides stimulated. The right hemisphere co-ordinates creativity and intuition, and the left focuses on more analytical and logical thinking, but they don’t work in isolation. Learning new skills, such as cooking and baking, is great for stimulating both sides of the brain. The left hemisphere uses logical thinking for measuring ingredients, whilst the right uses creativity for presenting your cooking.
This can also be seen in puzzle and strategy games, which requires both problem-solving (left hemisphere) and strategic thinking (right brain). Other examples of mentally stimulating activities include playing a musical instrument, drawing and painting, creative writing, meditation and brain-training apps.
The importance of nutrition for mental stimulation
Nutrition plays a bigger impact on cognitive health than we realise. Certain foods can provide antioxidants, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals, all of which give you energy and fuel your brain. An example is fish, known for being rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are linked to reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Berries and leafy greens are always great, packed with antioxidants that support brain cell regeneration. Pumpkin seeds provide a source of magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper, and zinc is particularly important for memory and learning. And believe it or not, dark chocolate is great for brain health! It contains flavonoids and antioxidants which increase blood flow to the brain, improving cognitive function and boosting mood.

Top brain games for mental stimulation
There are several ways to keep your brain mentally active, with certain games proven to enhance memory, focus, attention and problem-solving. Our personal favourite is Sudoku – to complete the puzzle, you have to analyze the grid and remember potential number placements for the different squares. This is a great way to improve short-term memory, which is essential for remembering everyday tasks.
