Celebrating love at every age this Valentine’s Day

Celebrating love at every age this Valentine’s Day

We don’t go through life alone, and Valentine’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to show appreciation for those around us. It’s a time to express love, and at Birchwood Care Services it’s one of our favourite celebrations for reminiscing and creating long-lasting memories.

And whilst it’s a day for everyone, it can be especially significant for elderly people. Whether it’s love for a partner, love for a carer, or love for friends and family, Valentine’s Day is a way to re-affirm our social connections. It can promote a sense of belonging, combatting harmful feelings of loneliness and isolation.

There is no set way to express appreciation for our loved ones, but we’ve put together some of our favourite activities to give you some inspiration.

Love through food

Valentine’s Day is often associated with sweet treats like chocolate, which has been said to release chemicals that boost our mood. Chocolate is often linked to love because it contains phenylethylamine, otherwise known as the ‘love molecule’, which releases endorphins in the brain.

Strawberries are known for their heart-like shape and bright red colour, two symbols of love. Chocolate covered strawberries make for an amazing gift or dessert – simply melt your chocolate, dip the strawberries in, and refrigerate for ten minutes until hardened. Chocolate truffles are also a great token of love, and you can choose a loved one’s favourite topping for an extra personalised touch.

Of course, many people choose to share dinner together at a restaurant on Valentine’s Day, allowing for quality time in an intimate venue.

Love through craft

A lot of people choose to do arts and crafts or DIY presents for Valentine’s Day, demonstrating love through a handmade gift. It allows for personal touches, letting inside jokes or special memories shine. Handmade greeting cards, jewellery and artwork are all great ways to show affection.

You can also do crafting activities with your loved one, using the time as a bonding experience. Making scrapbooks and personalised photo albums together can help you reminisce and share both old and new memories.

Love through community

There is no age limit on romantic or platonic love, but sometimes people can feel left behind when they haven’t experienced these life events. Reading stories of friendship and tales of people finding their soulmate later in life can be a great reminder that you can experience love in any capacity, at every age.

This day can also be particularly difficult for older individuals and those who have lost their partner. If you’re unsure how to celebrate, or unsure whether to celebrate at all, it can be helpful to talk it out with those around you. Consult family members or friends – they may have a Valentine’s tradition you can adopt.

And if you’re looking for something completely new, it can be a good idea to look through local community and Facebook groups, who may be hosting a Valentine’s event in your area.

Of course, it can also be a day for yourself! It’s great to have some dedicated time set aside for self-care. You may like a pamper day at the spa, or practising mindfulness with journaling and spending time in nature. It could also be a time to try something new – learning a new skill, or reading the book you haven’t got round to starting yet. Overall, love starts from within, so don’t be afraid to take some time for yourself!
