Helping loved ones celebrate autumn
Christmas may be creeping up on us, but we’re not done celebrating autumn yet! It’s truly such a special season, filled with cosy nights and feel-good food.
We want to make sure our clients are able to make the most of what this season has to offer. There are so many indoor and outdoor activities to help get in the spirit, and we’re here to help you get involved. Whether it’s a walk or an activity, we can support you however works best!
Fun activities to celebrate autumn
Autumn may be colder, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go outside. Wrap up warm and try exploring with:
- Nature walks: what better way to see the seasonal change than to walk through it? There are so many sights, smells and sounds to enjoy, and it’s a perfect way to combine mindfulness with light, gentle exercise. Plus, if you’re looking for a walking buddy, we’re always around to keep you company.
- Conker collecting: this is another sensory experience, and you can always use the conkers for crafting afterwards. According to some folklore, carrying conkers in your pocket has been said to bring good luck or wealth!
- Gardening: autumn is also a great time to garden a variety of veg – like spinach, carrots and broccoli. Planting bulbs like garlic and onions now is perfect timing for a spring harvest.
If you’d rather stay indoors, there are lots of activities that can accompany your cosy nights in.
Crafting is a big one:
- Pumpkin painting: this is easier (and a lot less messy) than pumpkin carving, and is a great outlet for self-expression. Painting helps strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, and has also been shown to improve emotional well-being.
- Autumn wreath-making: you can use all the autumn staples (faux leaves, pinecones, ribbon and berries) to create your own wreath. Again, great for hand-eye coordination, but it also leaves you with a beautiful keepsake of the season.
- Leaf pressing: there are leaves of all colours, and they can all be used in artwork! You can press them into books, stick over photo frames, or use for printing, giving you homely seasonal decor that doesn’t cost a lot.
Practical ways to stay cosy this autumn
Of course, changing seasons can be challenging for anyone. Adjusting to the colder temperatures often changes our routine, including our diet and sleeping habits. But, being aware of this ahead of time can help us prepare better, making sure we make this season cosy and comfortable for those in our care.
Staying warm:
- A key element of the home is central heating, and it’s important to check your heating is running smoothly around this time of year. Stocking up on hot water bottles or wheat bags, and keeping a supply of warm blankets ready for those colder nights is also a good idea.
- It may also be worth checking winter heating schemes to see if there’s any financial support available for your heating costs.
- Particularly for older people, the UK government has various schemes to help you heat your home, as well as local grants from your council, which we can walk you through.
Staying full:
- It’s also good to start thinking about a change in recipes. As we shift from summer to autumn, we often look for more substantial foods that are higher in fats and carbs, such as stews.
- We can help prepare more autumnal meals for you, helping you stay warm and full.
- We can always have a hot drink on hand – we’re loving herbal teas at the moment, which have been shown to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.
